Message safety

Is this WhatsApp message a scam?

Spot impersonation, urgent payment requests, verification-code theft, and suspicious WhatsApp links.

The short answer

Treat an unexpected urgent WhatsApp message as unverified, even when it uses a familiar name or profile photo. Independently contact the person through a number you already trust.

Warning signs to pause on

  • A request for a six-digit verification code or account reset help.
  • A sudden emergency, secrecy request, or demand to act immediately.
  • A shortened link or link that does not match the claimed organisation.
  • A request to continue the conversation on another app.

What to do next

  1. Upload a screenshot or paste the message without including unnecessary personal data.
  2. Call or message the person using a saved contact method.
  3. Never forward login codes, one-time passwords, or recovery links.
  4. Block and report the sender if identity cannot be verified.
